In Japan, the Spring Equinox or Vernal Equinox (“Shunbun no Hi”), which became a national holiday in 1948 and generally falls between March 19 and March 22, marks the beginning of spring. As one of the two equinoxes (the other being the Autumn Equinox), Shunbun coincides with a “higan,” a Buddhist holiday that begins three days before and ends three days after an equinox in which people pay respects to their ancestors.

Shunbun welcomes the start of spring and the blooming of cherry blossoms. It also marks the start of spring break for many students. In Japan, many welcome the Spring Equinox by enjoying nature, visiting parks, or hosting cherry blossoming viewing parties with family and friends. They may also visit ancestors’ gravesites to clean tombstones, leave flowers, or offer food or incense. Many restaurants will begin to offer food with cherry or plum blossom flavors—with Buddhists, in particular, enjoying “botamochi,” a ball-shaped sweet made from sticky rice and bean paste.
