Indigenous Peoples’ Day or Columbus Day? Given the complex history surrounding this day, how do we approach it as an organization?
We appreciate the spirit of exploration and the rich history Italian Americans bring to our country’s traditions and culture. We also recognize the devastating impact that colonization has had on Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities, and how that impact can still be felt today.
So, while some observe Columbus Day, we prefer to observe the holiday as Indigenous Peoples’ Day and use the day as an opportunity to learn, reflect, and find ways to empower Indigenous communities.
