Nagasaki Memorial Day (which takes place on August 9) observes the 1945 day when the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on Japan. Though this was an effort to force the country to surrender during World War II (which it offered to do on August 10), tens of thousands of lives were instantly ended by the blast, with extensive damage done to the city itself.

Today, the city of Nagasaki holds the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony at Peace Park. The event is attended by the families of the bombing victims and others who wish to show their respect. There, attendees announce the names of victims who have died or been identified within the last year, with guests—including the Prime Minister—offering wreaths in their honor.

At 11:02am (the time the A-bomb first fell on Nagasaki) a moment of silence and prayer is held, which is followed by a Peace Declaration given by the city’s mayor—and other addresses. After the ceremony, many attendees tour Hypocenter Park (which includes a monolith that marks the epicenter of the A-bomb explosion), the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, the memorial hall, and other memorials dedicated to those who lost their lives as a result of the bombing.
