What to do
For some folks, Memorial Day is just a day off and the start of summer.
But, it can be more significant for those who lost a friend or loved one and are remembering them during this time. So, knowing what to say can be hard. You don’t want to make assumptions so you can always start by asking a question.
For example:
- Ask them how they will spend the weekend.
- Wish them a happy time with friends & family (as appropriate).
- Say “I hope you have a meaningful day” or offer your support (as appropriate).
What is the meaning of Memorial Day in the US?
Memorial Day is a time of remembrance for those who died while serving in the US Armed Forces. It is also the unofficial beginning of summer.
Some Americans may observe the day by remembering lost loved ones and visiting cemeteries or memorials. Whereas others may use the long weekend for vacation or barbecues with friends and family.
