Simchat Torah is a Jewish holiday that marks an important transition—the official end of the religion’s annual cycle of public Torah readings and the start of a new cycle.
Held on the last day of Sukkot, Simchat Torah is a Holy Day—and, as such, Jewish people abstain from a variety of activities, including work. During Simchat Torah, people attend synagogue, where, during the evening service, the Torah scrolls are removed from the ark and carried around the synagogue seven times (circuits known as hakafots, which is Hebrew for “going around”) while attendees sing, dance, and worship.
