Shavuot, also known as The Feast of Shavuot or Pentecost, is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the spring harvest. It also commemorates the day when the Torah was given to Moses and the Israelites on Mount Sinai.
Shavuot is one of the three Jewish Pilgrimage Festivals in Israel; traditionally, Jewish people would travel to the Temple in Jerusalem to worship. Today, Jewish people observe Shavuot in a variety of ways, both traditional (attending synagogue or staying up all night reading the Torah) and contemporary (many Israelis, particularly children, mark Shavuot with a water fight, complete with water guns and balloons).
Israel is known as “the land of milk and honey”—and on Shavuot, the country celebrates all things milk, enjoying a variety of dairy-based treats, including cheese boards, cheese-based pasta dishes, and cheesecake.
