Hiroshima Peace Memorial Day

⚠️ Pyn note to HR: Update this message to reflect any available events or ERGs.

Held on August 6 in Japan, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Day commemorates the date in which the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima during the final days of World War II, destroying the city and instantly killing tens of thousands of men, women, and children. Today, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Day (or Hiroshima Peace Day) honors those who lost their lives on that day, shows support for survivors of the A-bomb, and promotes global peace.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Day events are held in Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan, in front of the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims monument. The ceremony officially begins at 8:00am with an announcement that includes the names of victims of the A-bomb that have been identified or died within the last year. At 8:15am—the time the A-bomb fell on Hiroshima—the Bell of Peace rings and sirens blare, followed by a moment of silence. After, the mayor of Hiroshima delivers the Peace Declaration, a speech calling for world peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons (with a copy of the speech sent to every nation in the world). There is then a release of doves and more speeches, including by the Prime Minister of Japan and the singing of the Hiroshima Peace Song.

In the evening, the Toro Nagashi ceremony is held in the water next to the A-bomb memorial. During this event, attendees light lanterns and send them down the river in hopes of world peace.
