Happy Thanksgiving! (for Canadian teams)

In 1879, Parliament declared a day for expressing thanks and gratitude for “the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed”—and with that proclamation came the start of Thanksgiving.

Today, Thanksgiving Day is commonly celebrated by gathering with friends and family to share a bountiful meal. What’s included in that meal varies; while some staples (like turkey, corn, and cranberry sauce) mirror American Thanksgiving food, there are also local dishes that are distinctly Canadian. For example, in Newfoundland, many people celebrate with a traditional Jigg’s dinner, a mashup of corned beef, root vegetables, and peas—while many Ontarians prefer a butter tart for dessert over the more traditional pumpkin pie.

In addition to plenty of family feasts, Thanksgiving Day is also the host to a variety of events, including parades and the Canadian Football League’s Thanksgiving Day Classic.

How to prepare
